Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the big "U" and the small "u" when asked
2. Say the sound /u/
3. Name the pictures on page 27: utensils, umbrella, uniform, Uranus
4. Answer the Do You Know question: a language that begins with "U" (Urdu)
5. Tick the picture that begins with "U" (umbrella, not tomato)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (U, t, u). Ask: "Where is U? Where is small u?" The learner points to each
• Criteria:
  • Points to big "U" and small "u" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the "/u/ /u/" box on page 27 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /u/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. utensils
  2. umbrella
  3. uniform
  4. Uranus
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know? (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "Which language begins with U?"

5. Tick Activity Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the tick activity at the bottom of page 27
• Criteria:
  • Names the umbrella and the tomato
  • Ticks the box under the umbrella
• Rating: Correct / With help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "u" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "u" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 27. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • utensils, umbrella, uniform, Uranus

Part C: Do You Know? (1 mark)

• Learner names the language that begins with "U": Urdu (1 mark)

Part D: Odd One Out (3 marks)

• Show pairs of pictures from the book. Learner points to the one that begins with "u" (1 mark each):
  • umbrella or tomato
  • uniform or tomato
  • Uranus or tomato

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan
