Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 21
Letter Tt
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Tt". Learners look at page 25, say the sound /t/ and name four pictures that begin with "T": tree, tortoise, train and tomato. On the second day they answer the Do You Know question about a vehicle and colour the picture that begins with "T". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read whole words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)
- Recognise the capital and small letter "Tt"
- Say the sound /t/
- Name pictures that begin with the letter "T"
- Colour the picture that begins with "T"
Key Vocabulary
- tree
- tortoise
- train
- tomato
Do You Know
- "Which vehicle begins with 'T'?"
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 25
- Letter cards "T" and "t"
- A real tomato (optional)
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Show the big red "Tt" on page 25. Point to the big "T" and the small "t"
- Draw a big "T" in the air: straight down, then a line across the top. Learners copy you
- Say the sound /t/ /t/ by tapping the tongue behind the top teeth. Learners repeat three times
Look and Say (12 minutes)
- Point to each picture on page 25 and say the word. Learners repeat twice:
- tree (a green tree growing on the tortoise's shell)
- tortoise (a big tortoise by the water)
- train (a blue train on the track)
- tomato (a round red tomato)
- Point to the pink "T" at the start of each word. Say: "T, /t/, tomato"
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Tick-Tock Sound Game (4 minutes)
- Tap the table softly while saying /t/ /t/ /t/ like a clock
- Say each word and tap once on the first sound: "t-ree", "t-rain"
- Learners tap and say with you
Act It Out (5 minutes)
- Walk very slowly like the tortoise and say "tortoise"
- Chug in a line like a train and say "train, choo choo!"
- Stand tall with arms up like a tree and say "tree"
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Hold up the "T" card. Learners say "T says /t/"
- Name the four pictures together one last time
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name the picture when you point, without help
Day 2: Do You Know and Activity (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 25
- Green and brown crayons
- Letter cards "T" and "t"
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 25 again. Point and say: tree, tortoise, train, tomato
- Say the sound together: "/t/ /t/ tree, /t/ /t/ train"
Do You Know (6 minutes)
- Read the question aloud: "Which vehicle begins with 'T'?"
- Give a clue: point to the train on page 25
- Accept "train". Learners make a train line around the room
Letter Hunt (5 minutes)
- Hold up the "T" and "t" cards
- Learners find the big "T" and the small "t" on page 25
- Ask them to point to the pink "T" in Tree, Tortoise, Train and Tomato
Book Activity: Colour the T Picture (10 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Colour the picture beginning with the letter 'T'."
- Point to the big pink "T" in the middle. Learners say "T, /t/"
- Point to each outline and name it together: apple, tortoise
- Ask: "Does apple begin with /t/?" (no, it begins with /a/) "Does tortoise begin with /t/?" (yes)
- Learners colour the tortoise; suggest green for the body and brown for the shell, like on the page
- Remind them to stay inside the lines
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Ask each learner to say one "T" word from the page
- Hold up a finished page and clap for neat colouring
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand while colouring; say "tortoise" together first
- Extension: Ask confident learners which letter apple begins with
Teaching Tips
- Say the sound /t/ as a short tap, not "tee"
- Learners have already learnt the letters "A" to "S"; the apple in the activity is a good chance to recall Letter Aa
- Keep the train game short and calm so learners can settle for colouring
