Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the capital "S" and the small "s" when asked
2. Say the sound /s/
3. Name the pictures on page 24: sun, snake, sunflower, sack
4. Name the planet that begins with "S"
5. Tick the picture that begins with "S" (snake, not plant)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are not asked to read or write whole words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (S, C, Z). Ask: "Where is S?" The learner points to it
• Criteria: Points to "S" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Ss" on page 24 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /s/ clearly as a hiss
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. sun
  2. snake
  3. sunflower
  4. sack
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "Which planet begins with 'S'?"
• Criteria: Says "Saturn"
• Rating: Yes / With a clue / Not yet

5. Read and Tick (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the activity at the bottom of page 24
• Criteria:
  • Says /s/ for "Ss"
  • Ticks the snake, not the plant
  • Makes a clear tick mark
• Rating: Correct / Correct with help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (3 marks)

1. Point to capital "S" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Point to small "s" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
3. Say the sound of "S" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 24. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • sun, snake, sunflower, sack

Part C: Do You Know (1 mark)

• Learner names Saturn (1 mark)

Part D: Find the S Picture (2 marks)

• Show the snake and the plant. Learner points to the one that begins with "S" (1 mark) and says its name (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 24 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Hiss /s/ like the snake with the teacher
  • Draw a big wiggly "S" in the air and in a sand tray with a finger
  • Say "/s/ /s/ sun, /s/ /s/ Saturn" with a parent at home
