Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 19
Letter Rr
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Rr". Learners look at page 23, say the sound /r/ and name four pictures that begin with "R": runner, rooster, racing car and refrigerator. On the second day they answer the Do You Know question about a river of Pakistan and encircle the picture that begins with "R". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read whole words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)
- Recognise the capital and small letter "Rr"
- Say the sound /r/
- Name pictures that begin with the letter "R"
- Encircle the picture that begins with "R"
Key Vocabulary
- runner
- rooster
- racing car
- refrigerator
Do You Know
- "Which river of Pakistan begins with 'R'?"
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 23
- Letter cards "R" and "r"
- Open space for running on the spot
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Show the big red "Rr" on page 23. Point to the big "R" and the small "r"
- Draw a big "R" in the air: straight down, back to the top, round to the middle, then kick out a slanting leg. Learners copy you
- Say the sound /r/ /r/ like a little growl. Learners repeat three times
Look and Say (12 minutes)
- Point to each picture on page 23 and say the word. Learners repeat twice:
- runner (a boy running on a track)
- rooster (a rooster with a red comb and green tail)
- racing car (a yellow and grey racing car)
- refrigerator (an open refrigerator full of food)
- Point to the pink "R" at the start of each word. Say: "R, /r/, rooster"
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Act It Out (8 minutes)
- Run on the spot like the runner and say "runner"
- Flap your arms and crow like the rooster, then say "rooster"
- Hold a pretend steering wheel and say "racing car, vroom!"
- Open a pretend refrigerator door and say "refrigerator"
Refrigerator Talk (3 minutes)
- Look at the open refrigerator on page 23
- Ask: "What can you see inside?" Accept the things learners can see in the picture
- Say together: "/r/ /r/ refrigerator"
Wrap-Up (2 minutes)
- Hold up the "R" card. Learners say "R says /r/"
- Name the four pictures together one last time
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name the picture when you point, without help
Day 2: Do You Know and Activity (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 23
- Pencils or crayons
- Letter cards "R" and "r"
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 23 again. Point and say: runner, rooster, racing car, refrigerator
- Say the sound together: "/r/ /r/ runner, /r/ /r/ rooster"
Do You Know (6 minutes)
- Read the question aloud: "Which river of Pakistan begins with 'R'?"
- Give a clue: "It flows through Lahore"
- Accept "Ravi". Learners say "/r/ /r/ Ravi"
Letter Hunt (5 minutes)
- Hold up the "R" and "r" cards
- Learners find the big "R" and the small "r" on page 23
- Ask them to point to the pink "R" in Runner, Rooster, Racing car and Refrigerator
Book Activity: Encircle the R Picture (10 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Encircle the picture beginning with the letter 'R'."
- Point to the big pink "R" in the middle. Learners say "R, /r/"
- Point to each picture and name it together: rooster, quail
- Ask: "Does rooster begin with /r/?" (yes) "Does quail begin with /r/?" (no, it begins with /q/)
- Show how to draw a circle all the way round the rooster
- Learners encircle the rooster
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Ask each learner to say one "R" word from the page
- Clap once for every correct word
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand to draw the circle; say "rooster" together first
- Extension: Ask confident learners which letter quail begins with
Teaching Tips
- Say the sound /r/, not "ar", when pointing to the letter
- "Encircle" means draw a circle round the picture; show it on the board first
- The quail in the activity links back to Letter Qq; praise learners who remember it
