Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the capital "R" and the small "r" when asked
2. Say the sound /r/
3. Name the pictures on page 23: runner, rooster, racing car, refrigerator
4. Name the river of Pakistan that begins with "R"
5. Encircle the picture that begins with "R" (rooster, not quail)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are not asked to read or write whole words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (R, P, B). Ask: "Where is R?" The learner points to it
• Criteria: Points to "R" without help (not "P")
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Rr" on page 23 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /r/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. runner
  2. rooster
  3. racing car
  4. refrigerator
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "Which river of Pakistan begins with 'R'?"
• Criteria: Says "Ravi"
• Rating: Yes / With a clue / Not yet

5. Encircle the R Picture (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the activity at the bottom of page 23
• Criteria:
  • Says /r/ for the pink "R"
  • Encircles the rooster, not the quail
  • Draws a closed circle round the picture
• Rating: Correct / Correct with help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (3 marks)

1. Point to capital "R" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Point to small "r" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
3. Say the sound of "R" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 23. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • runner, rooster, racing car, refrigerator

Part C: Do You Know (1 mark)

• Learner names the river Ravi (1 mark)

Part D: Find the R Picture (2 marks)

• Show the rooster and the quail. Learner points to the one that begins with "R" (1 mark) and says its name (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 23 pictures for two minutes each day

  • Say "/r/ /r/ Ravi, /r/ /r/ rooster" with a parent at home
