Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 18
Letter Qq
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Qq". Learners look at page 22, say the sound /q/ (said "kw") and name four pictures that begin with "Q": quail, quill, quench and quiver. On the second day they answer the Do You Know question about a city of Pakistan and tick the picture that begins with "Q". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read whole words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)
- Recognise the capital and small letter "Qq"
- Say the sound /q/
- Name pictures that begin with the letter "Q"
- Tick the picture that begins with "Q"
Key Vocabulary
- quail (a small bird)
- quill (a feather pen)
- quench (to drink water when you are thirsty)
- quiver (a bag that holds arrows)
Do You Know
- "Which city of Pakistan begins with 'Q'?"
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 22
- Letter cards "Q" and "q"
- A cup of water
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Show the big red "Qq" on page 22. Point to the big "Q" and the small "q"
- Draw a big "Q" in the air: go round like an "O", then add a little tail. Learners copy you
- Say the sound /q/ as "kw", with lips pushed forward. Learners repeat three times
Look and Say (12 minutes)
- Point to each picture on page 22 and say the word. Learners repeat twice:
- quail (a round bird with a curly feather on its head)
- quill (a big colourful feather with a pen tip)
- quench (a boy drinking a glass of water)
- quiver (a brown bag holding arrows)
- Explain each new word simply, using the picture:
- "A quill is a feather pen. Long ago people wrote with it"
- "When we are thirsty, we drink water to quench our thirst"
- "A quiver holds arrows"
- Point to the pink "Q" at the start of each word. Say: "Q, /q/, quail"
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Quench Time (5 minutes)
- Take a sip from a cup of water like the boy on the page
- Say: "I am thirsty. I quench my thirst"
- Learners pretend to drink and say "quench"
Act It Out (5 minutes)
- Pretend to write with a quill and say "quill"
- Hop like a little quail and say "quail"
- Pretend to take an arrow from a quiver and say "quiver"
Wrap-Up (3 minutes)
- Hold up the "Q" card. Learners say "Q says /q/"
- Name the four pictures together one last time
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to show you the action for each word
Day 2: Do You Know and Activity (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 22
- Pencils
- Letter cards "Q" and "q"
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 22 again. Point and say: quail, quill, quench, quiver
- Say the sound together: "/q/ /q/ quail, /q/ /q/ quill"
Do You Know (6 minutes)
- Read the question aloud: "Which city of Pakistan begins with 'Q'?"
- Give a clue: "It is a big city in Balochistan, with mountains all around"
- Accept "Quetta". Learners say "/q/ /q/ Quetta"
Letter Hunt (5 minutes)
- Hold up the "Q" and "q" cards
- Learners find the big "Q" and the small "q" on page 22
- Show how "Q" looks like "O" with a little tail. Learners find the tail
Book Activity: Tick the Q Picture (10 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Tick the picture beginning with the letter 'Q'."
- Point to the big pink "Q" in the middle. Learners say "Q, /q/"
- Point to each picture and name it together: nurse, quill
- Ask: "Does nurse begin with /q/?" (no, it begins with /n/) "Does quill begin with /q/?" (yes)
- Learners tick the box under the quill
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Ask each learner to say one "Q" word from the page
- Clap once for every correct word
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand to make the tick; say "quill" together first
- Extension: Ask confident learners which letter nurse begins with
Teaching Tips
- Say /q/ as "kw" every time, so learners hear it clearly
- Quench and quiver are new words for most learners; act them out instead of explaining at length
- The nurse in the activity links back to Letter Nn; praise learners who remember it
