Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the capital "Q" and the small "q" when asked
2. Say the sound /q/ ("kw")
3. Name the pictures on page 22: quail, quill, quench, quiver
4. Name the city of Pakistan that begins with "Q"
5. Tick the picture that begins with "Q" (quill, not nurse)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are not asked to read or write whole words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (Q, O, P). Ask: "Where is Q?" The learner points to it
• Criteria: Points to "Q" without help (not "O")
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Qq" on page 22 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /q/ ("kw") clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. quail
  2. quill
  3. quench
  4. quiver
• Criteria: Names at least 2 out of 4 pictures (these are new words)
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "Which city of Pakistan begins with 'Q'?"
• Criteria: Says "Quetta"
• Rating: Yes / With a clue / Not yet

5. Tick the Q Picture (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the activity at the bottom of page 22
• Criteria:
  • Says /q/ for the pink "Q"
  • Ticks the quill, not the nurse
  • Makes a clear tick mark
• Rating: Correct / Correct with help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (3 marks)

1. Point to capital "Q" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Point to small "q" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
3. Say the sound of "Q" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 22. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • quail, quill, quench, quiver

Part C: Do You Know (1 mark)

• Learner names Quetta (1 mark)

Part D: Find the Q Picture (2 marks)

• Show the quill and the nurse. Learner points to the one that begins with "Q" (1 mark) and says its name (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 22 pictures for two minutes each day

  • Say "/q/ /q/ Quetta" with a parent at home
