Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 16
Letter Oo
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Oo". Learners look at page 19, say the sound /o/ and name four pictures that begin with "O": orange, owl, onion and octopus. On the second day they answer the Do You Know question about a colour and colour the picture that begins with "O". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read whole words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)
- Recognise the capital and small letter "Oo"
- Say the sound /o/
- Name pictures that begin with the letter "O"
- Colour the picture that begins with "O"
Key Vocabulary
- orange
- owl
- onion
- octopus
Do You Know
- "Name the colour which begins with 'O'."
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 19
- Letter cards "O" and "o"
- A real orange and a real onion (optional)
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Show the big red "Oo" on page 19. Point to the big "O" and the small "o"
- Draw a big "O" in the air: start at the top and go all the way round. Learners copy you
- Make a round mouth and say the sound /o/ /o/. Learners repeat three times
Real Things (5 minutes)
- Pass a real orange and a real onion around the circle
- Each learner holds one and says its name
- Say together: "/o/ /o/ orange, /o/ /o/ onion"
Look and Say (10 minutes)
- Point to each picture on page 19 and say the word. Learners repeat twice:
- orange (an orange hanging from a branch)
- owl (a big brown owl)
- onion (a red onion, one half cut open)
- octopus (a pink octopus)
- Point to the pink "O" at the start of each word. Say: "O, /o/, octopus"
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Act It Out (6 minutes)
- Make big owl eyes with your fingers and say "owl"
- Wave your arms like the octopus and say "octopus"
- Pretend to peel an orange and say "orange"
- Count the octopus's arms on the page together
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Hold up the "O" card. Learners say "O says /o/"
- Make an "O" shape with both hands and name the four pictures one last time
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name the picture when you point, without help
Day 2: Do You Know and Activity (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 19
- Orange and other crayons
- Letter cards "O" and "o"
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 19 again. Point and say: orange, owl, onion, octopus
- Say the sound together: "/o/ /o/ orange, /o/ /o/ octopus"
Do You Know (6 minutes)
- Read the question aloud: "Name the colour which begins with 'O'."
- Give a clue: point to the orange on page 19 and ask what colour it is
- Accept "orange". Learners find something orange in the classroom
Letter Hunt (5 minutes)
- Hold up the "O" and "o" cards
- Learners find the big "O" and the small "o" on page 19
- Ask them to point to the pink "O" in Orange, Owl, Onion and Octopus
Book Activity: Colour the O Picture (10 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Colour the picture beginning with the letter 'O'."
- Point to the big pink "O" in the middle. Learners say "O, /o/"
- Point to each outline and name it together: orange, bus
- Ask: "Does orange begin with /o/?" (yes) "Does bus begin with /o/?" (no)
- Learners colour the orange with an orange crayon
- Remind them to stay inside the lines
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Ask each learner to say one "O" word from the page
- Hold up a finished page and clap for neat colouring
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand while colouring; say "orange" together first
- Extension: Ask confident learners to tell you why the bus is not coloured
Teaching Tips
- Make a round mouth every time you say /o/ so learners copy the shape
- The orange is both a fruit and a colour; use this to link the page and the Do You Know question
- Use the book's four pictures again and again so learners link each one to "O"
