Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 15
Letter Nn
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Nn". Learners look at page 18, say the sound /n/ and name four pictures that begin with "N": noodles, nest, nurse and net. On the second day they answer the Do You Know question, read the letters "Nn" and tick the picture that begins with "N". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read whole words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)
- Recognise the capital and small letter "Nn"
- Say the sound /n/
- Name pictures that begin with the letter "N"
- Read the letters and tick the correct picture
Key Vocabulary
- noodles
- nest
- nurse
- net
Do You Know
- "Which human body part begins with 'N'?"
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 18
- Letter cards "N" and "n"
- A small bowl of cooked noodles or an empty noodles packet (optional)
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Show the big red "Nn" on page 18. Point to the big "N" and the small "n"
- Draw a big "N" in the air: straight down, back to the top, slant down to the right, straight up. Learners copy you
- Say the sound /n/ /n/ with your tongue behind your top teeth. Learners repeat three times
Look and Say (12 minutes)
- Point to each picture on page 18 and say the word. Learners repeat twice:
- noodles (a plate of noodles)
- nest (a nest with two blue eggs on a branch)
- nurse (a nurse with a stethoscope)
- net
- Point to the pink "N" at the start of each word. Say: "N, /n/, noodles"
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Sound Game (6 minutes)
- Say each word slowly and stretch the first sound: "nnn-est", "nnn-et"
- Learners hum /n/ like a little buzzing sound, then say the whole word
- Ask: "What sound does nurse start with?" Learners say /n/
Act It Out (5 minutes)
- Pretend to eat noodles with a fork and say "noodles"
- Pretend to be a nurse listening with a stethoscope and say "nurse"
- Cup hands like a nest and say "nest"
- Throw a pretend net and say "net"
Wrap-Up (2 minutes)
- Hold up the "N" card. Learners say "N says /n/"
- Name the four pictures together one last time
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name the picture when you point, without help
Day 2: Do You Know and Activity (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 18
- Pencils
- Letter cards "N" and "n"
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 18 again. Point and say: noodles, nest, nurse, net
- Say the sound together: "/n/ /n/ noodles, /n/ /n/ nest"
Do You Know (6 minutes)
- Read the question aloud: "Which human body part begins with 'N'?"
- Give a clue: touch your nose and sniff
- Accept "nose". Learners touch their noses and say "nose, /n/ /n/ nose"
Letter Hunt (6 minutes)
- Hold up the "N" and "n" cards
- Learners find the big "N" and the small "n" on page 18
- Ask them to point to the pink "N" in Noodles, Nest, Nurse and Net
Book Activity: Read and Tick (8 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Read the letters and tick the correct pictures."
- Point to "Nn" in the first box. Learners say "N, /n/"
- Point to each picture and name it together: nest, lantern
- Ask: "Does nest begin with /n/?" (yes) "Does lantern begin with /n/?" (no)
- Learners tick the box above the nest
- Show how to make a tick: a small line down, then a long line up
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Ask each learner to say one "N" word from the page
- Clap once for every correct word
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand to make the tick; say "nest" together first
- Extension: Ask confident learners to tell you why lantern is not ticked
Teaching Tips
- Always say the sound /n/, not "en", when pointing to the letter
- Use the book's four pictures again and again so learners link each one to "N"
- Keep the Do You Know question light and fun; accept pointing to the nose
