Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the capital "N" and the small "n" when asked
2. Say the sound /n/
3. Name the pictures on page 18: noodles, nest, nurse, net
4. Answer the Do You Know question with a body part that begins with "N"
5. Tick the picture that begins with "N" (nest, not lantern)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are not asked to read or write whole words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (N, M, L). Ask: "Where is N?" The learner points to it
• Criteria: Points to "N" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Nn" on page 18 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /n/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. noodles
  2. nest
  3. nurse
  4. net
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "Which human body part begins with 'N'?"
• Criteria: Says or points to "nose"
• Rating: Yes / With a clue / Not yet

5. Read and Tick (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the activity at the bottom of page 18
• Criteria:
  • Says /n/ for "Nn"
  • Ticks the nest, not the lantern
  • Makes a clear tick mark
• Rating: Correct / Correct with help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (3 marks)

1. Point to capital "N" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Point to small "n" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
3. Say the sound of "N" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 18. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • noodles, nest, nurse, net

Part C: Do You Know (1 mark)

• Learner names a body part that begins with "N" (1 mark)

Part D: Find the N Picture (2 marks)

• Show the nest and the lantern. Learner points to the one that begins with "N" (1 mark) and says its name (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 18 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Hum /n/ and say "nnn-est", "nnn-et" with the teacher
  • Draw a big "N" in the air and in a sand tray with a finger
  • Touch their nose and say "nose, /n/" with a parent at home
