Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 14
Letter Mm
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Mm" and its sound /m/. Learners look at page 17, meet four words that begin with "M" (moon, mop, motorbike, map), talk about the "Do You Know" question about the king of fruits, and tick the picture that begins with "M". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise capital "M" and small "m"
- Say the sound /m/
- Name pictures that begin with "M": moon, mop, motorbike, map
- Pick out a picture that begins with "M" from one that does not
Key Vocabulary
- moon
- mop
- motorbike
- map
Do You Know?
- "Which fruit is called the king of fruits?"
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 17
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of moon, mop, motorbike, map
- A large "Mm" letter card
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Hold up the "Mm" card. Point to the big "M" and the small "m"
- Close your lips and hum /m/, then rub your tummy: "mmm, yummy!"
- Learners copy you three times: /m/ /m/ /m/
Look and Say (12 minutes)
- Open page 17 and point to the big red "Mm" and the sound box /m/ /m/
- Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
- moon
- mop
- motorbike
- map
- Point to the pink "M" at the start of each word and say: "Moon starts with M. /m/ /m/ moon"
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Action Fun (8 minutes)
- Moon: learners make a curved moon shape with both arms above their heads and say "moon"
- Mop: learners pretend to mop the floor and say "mop"
- Motorbike: learners twist pretend handles and say "vroom, motorbike"
- Map: learners open a pretend map wide and say "map"
- Call out a word; learners do the action
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Show one picture card at a time and ask: "What is this?"
- Ask: "What sound does mop start with?" Learners say /m/
- Draw "M" in the air together
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four pictures on their own
Day 2: Think and Tick (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 17
- Pencils
- Picture cards of moon, mop, motorbike, map
- A real mango, if in season
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 17 again. Point and say: moon, mop, motorbike, map
- Hum the sound together: /m/ /m/ /m/
Do You Know? (7 minutes)
- Point to the "Do You Know" box and read the question aloud: "Which fruit is called the king of fruits?"
- Let learners guess, then tell them: the mango is called the king of fruits
- Ask: "What sound does mango start with?" Learners say /m/. Mango begins with "M" too
- If you have a mango, pass it round so learners can hold and smell it
Hear the /m/ Sound (6 minutes)
- Say pairs of words. Learners rub their tummies and say "mmm" when they hear
/m/ at the start:
- map ... lantern
- lantern ... moon
- mop ... motorbike
- Praise every good listener
Tick the Picture (8 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Tick the pictures beginning with the letter 'M'."
- Point to the map and the lantern. Ask: "Which one starts with /m/?"
- Learners say "map" and tick the box under the map
- The lantern starts with "l", which we learned in Lesson 13
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Each learner says one "M" word from the page
- Say together: "M says /m/, as in moon"
Differentiation
- Support: Say "map" and "lantern" slowly and stress the first sound; guide the learner's hand to the right box
- Extension: Ask confident learners to point to the "M" at the start of each word on the page
Teaching Tips
- The /m/ sound is made with closed lips; let learners feel their lips hum
- The sound box on page 17 is printed as "/m /m/"; it should read "/m/ /m/"
- Link back to Lesson 13: the lantern in the activity starts with "L"
