Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 13

Letter Ll

Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "Ll" and its sound /l/. Learners look at page 16, meet four words that begin with "L" (ladybug, lunch box, lipstick, lantern), talk about the "Do You Know" question about the king of the forest, and join the "L" pictures to the letter. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise capital "L" and small "l"
  • Say the sound /l/
  • Name pictures that begin with "L": ladybug, lunch box, lipstick, lantern
  • Pick out the pictures that begin with "L" and join them to the letter

Key Vocabulary

  • ladybug
  • lunch box
  • lipstick
  • lantern

Do You Know?

  • "Which animal is the king of the forest?"

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 16
  • Picture cards (or the book pictures) of ladybug, lunch box, lipstick, lantern
  • A real lunch box
  • A large "Ll" letter card

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Hold up the "Ll" card. Point to the big "L" and the small "l"
  • Say the sound /l/ with the tip of your tongue up behind your top teeth, as in lantern
  • Learners copy you and sing it long: /l/ /l/ /l/

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 16 and point to the big red "Ll" and the sound box /l/ /l/
  • Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
    • ladybug
    • lunch box
    • lipstick
    • lantern
  • Point to the pink "L" at the start of each word and say: "Lantern starts with L. /l/ /l/ lantern"
  • Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book

What Is in the Lunch Box? (5 minutes)

  • Show a real lunch box. Ask: "What is this?" Learners say "lunch box"
  • Open it and ask: "What do we keep in a lunch box?" Let learners answer
  • Point to the lunch box on page 16 and say "/l/ /l/ lunch box"

Action Fun (6 minutes)

  • Ladybug: learners crawl their fingers up their arm and say "ladybug"
  • Lunch box: learners open and close their hands like a lid and say "lunch box"
  • Lantern: learners hold up a pretend lantern and say "lantern"
  • Call out a word; learners do the action

Wrap-Up (4 minutes)

  • Show one picture card at a time and ask: "What is this?"
  • Ask: "What sound does ladybug start with?" Learners say /l/

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four pictures on their own

Day 2: Think and Join (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 16
  • Pencils
  • Picture cards of ladybug, lunch box, lipstick, lantern

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 16 again. Point and say: ladybug, lunch box, lipstick, lantern
  • Sing the sound together: /l/ /l/ /l/

Do You Know? (7 minutes)

  • Point to the "Do You Know" box and read the question aloud: "Which animal is the king of the forest?"
  • Let learners guess, then tell them: the lion is the king of the forest
  • Ask: "What sound does lion start with?" Learners say /l/. Lion begins with "L" too
  • Learners give a big roar together

Hear the /l/ Sound (6 minutes)

  • Say words from the activity. Learners clap when they hear /l/ at the start:
    • lunch box ... jug
    • kettle ... lantern
  • Praise every good listener

Join the Pictures (8 minutes)

  • Read the instruction aloud: "Which of these things begin with the sound 'l'? Join them with the letter 'L'."
  • Point to each picture and name it: lunch box, jug, lantern, kettle
  • Learners say which ones start with /l/: lunch box and lantern
  • Learners draw a line from the dot next to the lunch box to the big "L", then from the dot next to the lantern to the "L"
  • The jug starts with "j" and the kettle starts with "k", so they are not joined

Wrap-Up (4 minutes)

  • Each learner says one "L" word from the page
  • Say together: "L says /l/, as in lantern"

Differentiation

  • Support: Guide the learner's finger along the line first, then the pencil
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to say what sound the jug and the kettle start with

Teaching Tips

  • Two pictures are joined (lunch box and lantern). Remind learners that jug starts with "J" (Lesson 10) and kettle was in Lesson 12 (K)
  • Start each joining line at the small dot next to the picture
