Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to capital "L" and small "l" when asked
2. Say the sound /l/
3. Name the pictures on page 16: ladybug, lunch box, lipstick, lantern
4. Say which animal is the king of the forest
5. Join the "L" pictures (lunch box, lantern) to the letter "L"

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (L, K, J). Ask: "Where is L?" The learner points to it
• Criteria: Points to "L" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Ll" on page 16 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /l/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. ladybug
  2. lunch box
  3. lipstick
  4. lantern
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know? (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "Which animal is the king of the forest?"
• Criteria: Says "lion"
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

5. Join the Pictures (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the activity at the bottom of page 16
• Criteria:
  • Joins the lunch box and the lantern to "L"
  • Does not join the jug or the kettle
• Rating: Correct / Correct with help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "L" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "L" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 16. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • ladybug, lunch box, lipstick, lantern

Part C: Do You Know? (1 mark)

• Learner says the lion is the king of the forest (1 mark)

Part D: Join the Pictures (3 marks)

• Learner joins the lunch box (1 mark) and the lantern (1 mark) to "L", and leaves the jug and the kettle unjoined (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Sing the /l/ sound with the tongue tip up behind the top teeth
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 16 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Practise joining two dots with a finger, then with a pencil
  • Draw a big "L" in the air or in a sand tray with a finger
