Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 12
Letter Kk
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Kk" and its sound /k/. Learners look at page 15, meet four words that begin with "K" (kingfisher, kettle, keys, kiwi), talk about the "Do You Know" question about a city of Pakistan, and encircle the picture that begins with "K". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise capital "K" and small "k"
- Say the sound /k/
- Name pictures that begin with "K": kingfisher, kettle, keys, kiwi
- Pick out and encircle a picture that begins with "K"
Key Vocabulary
- kingfisher
- kettle
- keys
- kiwi
Do You Know?
- "Which city of Pakistan begins with 'K'?"
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 15
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of kingfisher, kettle, keys, kiwi
- A bunch of real keys
- A large "Kk" letter card
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Hold up the "Kk" card. Point to the big "K" and the small "k"
- Say the sound /k/ short and sharp from the back of the throat, as in kettle
- Learners copy you three times: /k/ /k/ /k/
Look and Say (10 minutes)
- Open page 15 and point to the big red "Kk" and the sound box /k/ /k/
- Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
- kingfisher
- kettle
- keys
- kiwi
- Point to the pink "K" at the start of each word and say: "Kettle starts with K. /k/ /k/ kettle"
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Jingle the Keys (5 minutes)
- Shake a bunch of real keys. Ask: "What are these?" Learners say "keys"
- Pass the keys around the circle. Each learner jingles them and says "/k/ /k/ keys"
Action Fun (6 minutes)
- Kingfisher: learners flap their arms like a bird and dive down
- Kettle: learners make a spout with one arm and say "kettle"
- Keys: learners turn a pretend key in a lock and say "keys"
- Kiwi: learners pretend to cut a fruit in half and say "kiwi"
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Show one picture card at a time and ask: "What is this?"
- Ask: "What sound does kiwi start with?" Learners say /k/
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four pictures on their own
Day 2: Think and Encircle (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 15
- Pencils or crayons
- Picture cards of kingfisher, kettle, keys, kiwi
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 15 again. Point and say: kingfisher, kettle, keys, kiwi
- Say the sound together: /k/ /k/ /k/
Do You Know? (7 minutes)
- Point to the "Do You Know" box and read the question aloud: "Which city of Pakistan begins with 'K'?"
- Let learners guess, then help: "Karachi begins with K!"
- Say "Karachi" together and clap the word
- If a learner names another city that begins with "K", praise it
Hear the /k/ Sound (6 minutes)
- Say pairs of words. Learners clap when they hear the /k/ sound at the start:
- kettle ... iguana
- iguana ... kiwi
- keys ... kingfisher
- Praise every good listener
Encircle the Picture (8 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Encircle the picture beginning with the letter 'K'."
- Point to the kettle and the iguana. Ask: "Which one starts with /k/?"
- Learners say "kettle" and draw a circle around the kettle
- The iguana starts with "i", which we learned before
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Each learner says one "K" word from the page
- Say together: "K says /k/, as in kettle"
Differentiation
- Support: Show learners how to draw a circle around a picture first with a finger, then with a crayon
- Extension: Ask confident learners to point to the "K" at the start of each word on the page
Teaching Tips
- "Encircle" means draw a ring around the picture. Show it on the board first
- Link back to Lesson 9: the iguana in the activity starts with "I"
