Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to capital "K" and small "k" when asked
2. Say the sound /k/
3. Name the pictures on page 15: kingfisher, kettle, keys, kiwi
4. Name a city of Pakistan that begins with "K"
5. Encircle the picture that begins with "K" (kettle, not iguana)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (K, J, H). Ask: "Where is K?" The learner points to it
• Criteria: Points to "K" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Kk" on page 15 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /k/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. kingfisher
  2. kettle
  3. keys
  4. kiwi
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know? (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "Which city of Pakistan begins with 'K'?"
• Criteria: Says "Karachi" (or another city that begins with "K")
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

5. Encircle the Picture (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the activity at the bottom of page 15
• Criteria:
  • Draws a circle around the kettle
  • Leaves the iguana alone
• Rating: Correct / Correct with help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "K" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "K" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 15. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • kingfisher, kettle, keys, kiwi

Part C: Do You Know? (1 mark)

• Learner names a city of Pakistan that begins with "K" (1 mark)

Part D: Encircle the Picture (3 marks)

• Learner encircles the kettle (1 mark), leaves the iguana alone (1 mark) and says "kettle starts with K" when asked (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Jingle a bunch of keys and say "/k/ /k/ keys" with the teacher
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 15 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Practise drawing a circle around a picture with a finger, then a crayon
  • Draw a big "K" in the air or in a sand tray with a finger
