Revision Objectives

• Remember that "a" and "e" are vowels with a short sound and a long sound
• Blend short "a" words: cat, bag, fan, hat, can, jam, van
• Blend short "e" words: men, net, wet, web, pen, red, hen
• Hear short and long sounds in the Phonic Drill words

Revision Activity 1: Talking Vowels

Time: 4 minutes

• Hold up "a" and say in a funny voice: "Hi! I am 'a'. I am a vowel. I produce two sounds -- short sound and long sound."
• Learners repeat it, then do the same for "e"
• Ask: "What is the short sound of a?" (/a/) "Of e?" (/e/)

Revision Activity 2: Robot Blending

Time: 6 minutes

• Say a word in robot voice, one sound at a time: "/j/ ... /a/ ... /m/"
• Learners blend and say "jam"
• Use words from page 13: cat, bag, fan, hat, can, jam, van, men, net, wet, web, pen, red, hen

Revision Activity 3: Letter Card Push

Time: 5 minutes

• Lay out three letter cards, for example p, e, n
• A learner touches each card as the class says the sound, then pushes them together and says "pen"
• Repeat with c, a, n and h, e, n

Revision Activity 4: a or e?

Time: 4 minutes

• Say a word from page 13
• Learners show one finger for /a/ in the middle and two fingers for /e/
• Try: bag, net, van, red, hat, web

Revision Activity 5: Short or Long?

Time: 5 minutes

• Say words from the Phonic Drill on page 14
• Learners crouch small for a short sound and stretch up tall for a long sound
• Try: rat, cake, sad, name, leg, sea, hen, tea

Revision Activity 6: Echo the Drill

Time: 4 minutes

• Say one row of page 14 at a time; learners echo each word
• Short "a": cat, rat, bat, hat, mat
• Long "e": pea, sea, flea, tea, peel

• "a" and "e" are vowels. Each one has a short sound and a long sound
• Three-letter words generally have a short vowel sound
