Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 10
Letter Jj
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Jj" and its sound /j/. Learners look at page 12, meet four words that begin with "J" (jet, jellyfish, jaguar, jeep), talk about the "Do You Know" question about our national animal, and colour the picture that begins with "J". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise capital "J" and small "j"
- Say the sound /j/
- Name pictures that begin with "J": jet, jellyfish, jaguar, jeep
- Pick out and colour a picture that begins with "J"
Key Vocabulary
- jet
- jellyfish
- jaguar
- jeep
Do You Know?
- "What is the name of our national animal?"
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 12
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of jet, jellyfish, jaguar, jeep
- A large "Jj" letter card
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Hold up the "Jj" card. Point to the big "J" and the small "j" with its dot
- Say the sound /j/ with a little jump, as in jeep
- Learners jump on the spot each time they say /j/ /j/ /j/
Look and Say (12 minutes)
- Open page 12 and point to the big red "Jj" and the sound box /j/ /j/
- Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
- jet
- jellyfish
- jaguar
- jeep
- Point to the pink "J" at the start of each word and say: "Jeep starts with J. /j/ /j/ jeep"
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Action Fun (8 minutes)
- Jet: learners stretch their arms out like wings and zoom and say "jet"
- Jellyfish: learners wave their fingers down like soft legs and say "jellyfish"
- Jaguar: learners make paws and run on the spot and say "jaguar"
- Jeep: learners hold a pretend steering wheel and say "jeep"
- Call out a word; learners do the action
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Show one picture card at a time and ask: "What is this?"
- Ask: "What sound does jeep start with?" Learners say /j/
- Draw "J" in the air together
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four pictures on their own
Day 2: Think and Colour (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 12
- Crayons
- Picture cards of jet, jellyfish, jaguar, jeep
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 12 again. Point and say: jet, jellyfish, jaguar, jeep
- Jump and say the sound together: /j/ /j/ /j/
Do You Know? (7 minutes)
- Point to the "Do You Know" box and read the question aloud: "What is the name of our national animal?"
- Let learners guess, then tell them: our national animal is the Markhor
- Say "Markhor" together and clap the word
- Explain simply: the Markhor is a wild animal with long twisted horns. It lives in the mountains of Pakistan
Hear the /j/ Sound (6 minutes)
- Say pairs of words. Learners jump when they hear the /j/ sound at the start:
- jeep ... apple
- apple ... jet
- jellyfish ... jaguar
- Praise every good listener
Colour the Picture (8 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Colour the pictures beginning with the letter 'J'."
- Point to the jeep and the apple. Ask: "Which one starts with /j/?"
- Learners say "jeep" and colour the jeep
- The apple starts with "a", so it stays white
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Each learner says one "J" word from the page
- Say together: "J says /j/, as in jeep"
Differentiation
- Support: Say "jeep" and "apple" slowly and stress the first sound; point to the jeep together before colouring
- Extension: Ask confident learners to point to the "J" at the start of each word on the page
Teaching Tips
- Teach the word "jaguar" as written. The animal in the book's picture is not a jaguar, so do not describe its spots or shape; if you can, show a real jaguar photo instead
- Keep the colouring to the jeep only; the apple begins with "a"
