Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to capital "J" and small "j" when asked
2. Say the sound /j/
3. Name the pictures on page 12: jet, jellyfish, jaguar, jeep
4. Name our national animal, the Markhor
5. Colour the picture that begins with "J" (jeep, not apple)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (J, I, H). Ask: "Where is J?" The learner points to it
• Criteria: Points to "J" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Jj" on page 12 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /j/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. jet
  2. jellyfish
  3. jaguar
  4. jeep
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know? (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "What is the name of our national animal?"
• Criteria: Says "Markhor"
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

5. Colour the Picture (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the activity at the bottom of page 12
• Criteria:
  • Colours the jeep
  • Leaves the apple uncoloured
• Rating: Correct / Correct with help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "J" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "J" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 12. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • jet, jellyfish, jaguar, jeep

Part C: Do You Know? (1 mark)

• Learner names our national animal, the Markhor (1 mark)

Part D: Colour the Picture (3 marks)

• Learner picks the jeep (1 mark), leaves the apple uncoloured (1 mark) and says "jeep starts with J" when asked (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Jump and say /j/ with the teacher five times a day

  • Draw a big "J" in the air or in a sand tray with a finger
