Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 9
Letter Ii
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Ii" and its sound /i/. Learners look at page 11, meet four words that begin with "I" (impala, insect, iron, iguana), talk about the "Do You Know" question about the impala, and tick the picture that begins with "I". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise capital "I" and small "i"
- Say the sound /i/
- Name pictures that begin with "I": impala, insect, iron, iguana
- Pick out a picture that begins with "I" from one that does not
Key Vocabulary
- impala
- insect
- iron
- iguana
Do You Know?
- "Is impala pet or wild animal?"
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 11
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of impala, insect, iron, iguana
- A large "Ii" letter card
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Hold up the "Ii" card. Point to the big "I" and the small "i" with its dot
- Say the sound /i/ short and quick, with a little smile, as in insect
- Learners copy you three times: /i/ /i/ /i/
Look and Say (12 minutes)
- Open page 11 and point to the big red "Ii" and the sound box /i/ /i/
- Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
- impala
- insect
- iron
- iguana
- Point to the pink "I" at the start of each word and say: "Insect starts with I. /i/ /i/ insect"
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Action Fun (8 minutes)
- Impala: learners put two fingers up on their heads like horns and say "impala"
- Insect: learners wriggle a finger slowly along their arm and say "insect"
- Iron: learners move a flat hand forward and back as if ironing and say "iron"
- Iguana: learners crawl their fingers along the floor and say "iguana"
- Call out a word; learners do the action
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Show one picture card at a time and ask: "What is this?"
- Ask: "What sound does insect start with?" Learners say /i/
- Draw "I" in the air together
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four pictures on their own
Day 2: Think and Tick (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 11
- Pencils
- Picture cards of impala, insect, iron, iguana
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 11 again. Point and say: impala, insect, iron, iguana
- Say the sound together: /i/ /i/ /i/
Do You Know? (7 minutes)
- Point to the "Do You Know" box and read the question aloud: "Is impala pet or wild animal?"
- Ask: "Can an impala live in your house?" Let learners answer
- Explain simply: an impala is a wild animal. It lives in the open grassland, not in a home
- Ask: "Is the iguana big or small in the picture?" Let learners talk about it
Hear the /i/ Sound (6 minutes)
- Say pairs of words. Learners clap when they hear the /i/ sound at the start:
- insect ... fly
- fly ... impala
- iguana ... fly
- Praise every good listener
Tick the Picture (8 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Read the letters and tick the correct pictures."
- Point to "I i" in the first box, then to the fly and the iron
- Ask: "Which one starts with I?" Learners say "iron" and tick the iron
- Fly starts with "f", so the fly box stays empty
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Each learner says one "I" word from the page
- Say together: "I says /i/, as in insect"
Differentiation
- Support: Say "fly" and "iron" slowly and stress the first sound; guide the learner's hand to the right box
- Extension: Ask confident learners to point to the "I" at the start of each word on the page
Teaching Tips
- Impala, insect and iguana start with the short /i/ sound. Iron starts with the letter "I" too, but there "I" says its own name. Tell learners all four words begin with the letter "I"
- In the activity the answer is the iron. A fly is a kind of insect, so if a learner says "insect", praise the thinking, then say: "The word fly starts with f. Iron starts with I"
