Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to capital "H" and small "h" when asked
2. Say the sound /h/
3. Name the pictures on page 10: hive, hen, helicopter, hook
4. Answer the "Do You Know" question about hens with yes or no
5. Tick the picture that begins with "H" (hook, not apple)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (H, G, F). Ask: "Where is H?" The learner points to it
• Criteria: Points to "H" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Hh" on page 10 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /h/ clearly with a breath of air
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. hive
  2. hen
  3. helicopter
  4. hook
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know? (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "Do hens lay eggs round the year?"
• Criteria: Answers "yes" and joins in the talk
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

5. Tick the Picture (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the activity at the bottom of page 10
• Criteria:
  • Ticks the hook
  • Leaves the apple box empty
• Rating: Correct / Correct with help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "H" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "H" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 10. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • hive, hen, helicopter, hook

Part C: Sound Listening (2 marks)

• Say "hen ... apple". Learner says which one starts with /h/ (1 mark)
• Say "apple ... hook". Learner says which one starts with /h/ (1 mark)

Part D: Tick the Picture (2 marks)

• Learner ticks the hook (1 mark) and leaves the apple unticked (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Practise the /h/ sound with a hand in front of the mouth to feel the air
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 10 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Do the hen, helicopter and hook actions while saying each word
  • Draw a big "H" in the air or in a sand tray with a finger
