Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 6
Letter Ff
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Ff". Learners look at the big capital "F" and small "f", say the sound /f/, and name four pictures that begin with "F": flamingo, frying pan, fish and fan. On the second day they answer the Do You Know question about a living thing that begins with "F" and colour the frog, leaving out the apple. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)
- Recognise the capital letter "F" and the small letter "f"
- Say the sound /f/
- Name things that begin with the letter "F"
- Colour the picture that begins with "F"
Key Vocabulary
- flamingo
- frying pan
- fish
- fan
Do You Know
- "Which living thing begins with 'F'?"
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 8
- A hand fan or a sheet of paper folded into a fan
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of flamingo, frying pan, fish, fan
- Board and marker
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Quickly revise: "What does A say? B? C? D? E?"
- Draw a big "F" in the air with your finger: a line down, then a line across the top and a shorter line across the middle
- Show the /f/ sound: top teeth on the bottom lip, then blow. Learners copy
Meet the Letter (5 minutes)
- Open page 8 and point to the big red "Ff"
- Say: "This is big F. This is small f." Learners point and repeat
- Point to the /f/ /f/ bubble and say it together
- Show that every word on the page starts with a pink "F"
Look and Say (10 minutes)
- Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
- flamingo
- frying pan
- fish
- fan
- Talk about the pictures: the flamingo is a big pink bird with a long neck; the frying pan has an egg cooking in it; the blue fish swims in the sea; the red fan opens out to keep us cool
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture
Move and Say (5 minutes)
- Flamingo: learners stand on one leg
- Fish: learners put their palms together and swim
- Frying pan: learners hold a pretend pan and flip an egg
- Fan: learners wave a hand to cool their faces
- Each time, say the word and the sound: "/f/ /f/ fish"
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Wave a fan (or folded paper) at each learner. They feel the air and say "/f/ /f/ fan"
- Draw "F" in the air one last time
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four pictures without help
Day 2: Do You Know and Colour (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 8
- Green crayons, plus other colours
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 8 again. Point and say: flamingo, frying pan, fish, fan
- Sing: "f, f, fish; f, f, fan"
- Draw "F" and "f" on the board; learners trace them in the air
Do You Know (8 minutes)
- Point to the boy in the hat and read his question aloud: "Which living thing begins with 'F'?"
- Remind learners: living things eat, grow and move by themselves
- Point to each page picture and ask: "Living or non-living?"
- flamingo: living
- frying pan: non-living
- fish: living
- fan: non-living
- Say together: "The flamingo and the fish are living things. They begin with F."
Listen for /f/ (5 minutes)
- Say each word slowly. Learners blow a soft /f/ when they hear it at the start: flamingo, fish, frog, fan, apple
- Ask: "Did apple start with /f/?" (no, it starts with /a/)
Colour the Picture (10 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Colour the picture beginning with the letter 'F'."
- Point to the pink "F" in the middle and say /f/ together
- Point to the frog and ask: "Does frog start with F?" (yes)
- Point to the apple and ask: "Does apple start with F?" (no)
- Learners colour only the frog, green or any colour they like
Wrap-Up (2 minutes)
- Ask each learner: "What did you colour?" Learners say "frog"
- Say the four page words one last time together
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand to start colouring; say "frog, /f/" as you colour together
- Extension: Ask confident learners whether a frog is a living thing (yes)
Teaching Tips (from textbook)
- The /f/ /f/ bubble shows the sound of the letter; say it twice each time
- The first letter of every word is printed in pink to show the "F"
- Read the activity instruction aloud: learners colour the picture, they do not read the words
