Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 5

Letter Ee

Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "Ee". Learners look at the big capital "E" and small "e", say the sound /e/ as in elephant, and name four pictures that begin with "E": elephant, eagle, eraser and earth. On the second day they answer the Do You Know question about a bird that begins with "E" and tick the elephant, leaving out the dog. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Outcomes (from textbook)

  • Recognise the capital letter "E" and the small letter "e"
  • Say the sound /e/
  • Name things that begin with the letter "E"
  • Tick the picture that begins with "E"

Key Vocabulary

  • elephant
  • eagle
  • eraser
  • earth

Do You Know

  • "Name the bird which begins with 'E'." (eagle)

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 7
  • A real eraser
  • A globe, if the school has one
  • Picture cards (or the book pictures) of elephant, eagle, eraser, earth
  • Board and marker

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Quickly revise: "What does A say? B? C? D?"
  • Draw a big "E" in the air with your finger: a line down, then three lines across (top, middle, bottom)
  • Say the sound /e/ as at the start of elephant. Learners copy

Meet the Letter (5 minutes)

  • Open page 7 and point to the big red "Ee"
  • Say: "This is big E. This is small e." Learners point and repeat
  • Point to the /e/ /e/ bubble and say it together
  • Show that every word on the page starts with a pink "E"

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
    • elephant
    • eagle
    • eraser
    • earth
  • Talk about the pictures: the elephant has big ears, a long trunk and two white tusks; the eagle is flying with its wings spread wide; the pink eraser rubs out pencil marks; the earth is the round world we live on
  • Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture

Move and Say (5 minutes)

  • Elephant: learners swing one arm like a trunk and walk slowly
  • Eagle: learners spread their arms wide and swoop
  • Eraser: learners rub their palms together as if rubbing out
  • Earth: learners make a big round ball with their arms
  • Each time, say the word: "/e/ /e/ elephant"

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Pass a real eraser around the circle. Each learner says "eraser"
  • If you have a globe, show it and say "earth"
  • Draw "E" in the air one last time

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four pictures without help

Day 2: Do You Know and Tick (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 7
  • Pencils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 7 again. Point and say: elephant, eagle, eraser, earth
  • Sing: "e, e, elephant; e, e, eagle"
  • Draw "E" and "e" on the board; learners trace them in the air

Do You Know (7 minutes)

  • Point to the boy in the hat and read his question aloud: "Name the bird which begins with 'E'."
  • Ask: "Which picture on this page is a bird?" Learners point to the eagle
  • Talk about the eagle: it has big wings, a white head and a strong yellow beak
  • Say together: "Eagle is a bird. Eagle starts with E."

Listen and Choose (6 minutes)

  • Say pairs of words. Learners point up for the word that begins with "E":
    • elephant / dog
    • eagle / cake
    • eraser / bus
  • Praise every right answer with a big elephant trumpet sound

Tick the Picture (10 minutes)

  • Read the instruction aloud: "Read the letters and tick the correct picture."
  • Point to the pink "Ee" in the first box and say the letter together
  • Point to the elephant and ask: "Does elephant start with E?" (yes)
  • Point to the dog and ask: "Does dog start with E?" (no)
  • Learners tick the small box above the elephant

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Ask each learner: "Which picture did you tick?" Learners say "elephant"
  • Say the four page words one last time together

Differentiation

  • Support: Hold the learner's hand to make the tick; say "elephant, /e/" as you tick together
  • Extension: Ask confident learners which letter dog starts with (they met "D" in Lesson 4)

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • The /e/ /e/ bubble shows the sound of the letter; say it twice each time
  • The first letter of every word is printed in pink to show the "E"
  • The /e/ sound is heard most clearly in elephant. Eagle, eraser and earth also begin with the letter "E" but the first sound is a little different, so use elephant as the main sound word
  • Read the activity instruction aloud: learners tick the picture, they do not read the words
