Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 4
Letter Dd
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Dd". Learners look at the big capital "D" and small "d", say the sound /d/, and name four pictures that begin with "D": dragonfly, dinosaur, doll and duckling. On the second day they answer the Do You Know question about a non-living thing that begins with "D" and tick the dinosaur, leaving out the cane they met in Lesson 3. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)
- Recognise the capital letter "D" and the small letter "d"
- Say the sound /d/
- Name things that begin with the letter "D"
- Tick the picture that begins with "D"
Key Vocabulary
- dragonfly
- dinosaur
- doll
- duckling
Do You Know
- "Name a non-living thing which begins with 'D'."
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 6
- A doll from the classroom
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of dragonfly, dinosaur, doll, duckling
- Board and marker
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Quickly revise: "What does A say? B? C?"
- Draw a big "D" in the air with your finger: a straight line down, then a big curve round
- Tap your tongue behind your top teeth and say /d/ /d/. Learners copy
Meet the Letter (5 minutes)
- Open page 6 and point to the big red "Dd"
- Say: "This is big D. This is small d." Learners point and repeat
- Point to the /d/ /d/ bubble and say it together
- Show that every word on the page starts with a pink "D"
Look and Say (10 minutes)
- Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
- dragonfly
- dinosaur
- doll
- duckling
- Talk about the pictures: the dragonfly has long see-through wings; the green dinosaur stands on two legs; the doll has red hair and a pink dress; the duckling is a baby duck
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture
Move and Say (5 minutes)
- Dragonfly: learners flutter their arms quickly
- Dinosaur: learners stomp and roar
- Duckling: learners waddle and say "quack"
- Each time, say the word and the sound: "/d/ /d/ dinosaur"
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Pass a doll around the circle. Each learner says "doll" and /d/
- Draw "D" in the air one last time
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four pictures without help
Day 2: Do You Know and Tick (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 6
- Pencils
- The doll from Day 1
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 6 again. Point and say: dragonfly, dinosaur, doll, duckling
- Sing the /d/ sound: "d, d, doll; d, d, duckling"
- Draw "D" and "d" on the board; learners trace them in the air
Do You Know (8 minutes)
- Point to the boy in the hat and read his question aloud: "Name a non-living thing which begins with 'D'."
- Explain simply: living things eat, grow and move by themselves; non-living things do not
- Point to each page picture and ask: "Living or non-living?"
- dragonfly: living
- dinosaur: living (long, long ago)
- duckling: living
- doll: non-living
- Hold up the doll: "The doll is non-living, and doll begins with D!"
Tick the Picture (12 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Tick the picture beginning with the letter 'D'."
- Point to the pink "D" in the middle and say /d/ together
- Point to the cane and ask: "Do you remember this from Lesson 3? What is it?" (cane) "Does cane start with D?" (no, it starts with /c/)
- Point to the dinosaur and ask: "Does dinosaur start with D?" (yes)
- Learners tick the box under the dinosaur
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Ask each learner: "Which picture did you tick?" Learners say "dinosaur"
- Say the four page words one last time together
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand to make the tick; say "dinosaur, /d/" as you tick together
- Extension: Ask confident learners to say which sound cane starts with
Teaching Tips (from textbook)
- The /d/ /d/ bubble shows the sound of the letter; say it twice each time
- The first letter of every word is printed in pink to show the "D"
- The activity says "pictures", but only the dinosaur begins with "D"; tell learners to tick one picture
