Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the capital "D" and the small "d" when asked
2. Say the sound /d/
3. Name the pictures on page 6: dragonfly, dinosaur, doll, duckling
4. Tick the picture that begins with "D" (dinosaur, not cane)
5. Take part in the Do You Know question about a non-living thing that begins with "D"

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Dd" on page 6. Ask: "Which one is big D? Which one is small d?" The learner points
• Criteria: Points to both letters without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the /d/ /d/ bubble and ask: "What sound does D make?"
• Criteria: Says /d/ clearly, with the tongue tapping behind the top teeth
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. dragonfly
  2. dinosaur
  3. doll
  4. duckling
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Tick Activity (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the activity at the bottom of page 6: "Tick the pictures beginning with the letter 'D'."
• Criteria:
  • Ticks the dinosaur
  • Leaves the cane without a tick
  • Can say why: "Cane starts with /c/"
• Rating: Correct with reason / Correct / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "D" and "d" on page 6 (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "d" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 6. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • dragonfly, dinosaur, doll, duckling

Part C: Living or Non-Living (2 marks)

• Point to the doll. Ask: "Is the doll living or non-living?" (non-living) (1 mark)
• Point to the duckling. Ask: "Is the duckling living or non-living?" (living) (1 mark)

Part D: Tick It (2 marks)

• Learner ticks the dinosaur (1 mark) and does not tick the cane (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Hold a doll with the teacher and say "/d/ /d/ doll"

  • Tap the tongue behind the top teeth to practise /d/ /d/ /d/
  • Say "dragonfly, dinosaur, doll, duckling" with a parent at home
