Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 3
Letter Cc
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Cc". Learners look at the big capital "C" and small "c", say the sound /c/ (the hard sound in cake), and name four pictures that begin with "C": crow, cricket, cake and cane. On the second day they answer the Do You Know question about the desert that begins with "C" and join the /c/ things (cake, candle, cup) to the letter "C", leaving out the ant. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)
- Recognise the capital letter "C" and the small letter "c"
- Say the sound /c/
- Name things that begin with the letter "C"
- Join things that begin with /c/ to the letter "C"
Key Vocabulary
- crow
- cricket
- cake
- cane
Do You Know
- "Name the desert which begins with 'C'." (Cholistan)
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 5
- A cup and a candle (not lit)
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of crow, cricket, cake, cane
- Board and marker
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Quickly revise: "What does A say? What does B say?"
- Draw a big "C" in the air with your finger: start at the top and curve round like an open circle
- Say the sound /c/ from the back of the throat, short and sharp. Learners copy
Meet the Letter (5 minutes)
- Open page 5 and point to the big red "Cc"
- Say: "This is big C. This is small c. They look nearly the same; small c is just smaller." Learners point and repeat
- Point to the /c/ /c/ bubble and say it together
- Show that every word on the page starts with a pink "C"
Look and Say (10 minutes)
- Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
- crow
- cricket
- cake
- cane
- Talk about the pictures: the black crow is flying; two boys are playing cricket with a bat and a red ball; the cake has candles on top; the cane is a walking stick
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture
Move and Say (5 minutes)
- Crow: learners flap their wings and say "caw, caw, crow"
- Cricket: learners swing a pretend bat
- Cane: learners walk slowly with a pretend walking stick
- Cake: learners blow out pretend candles
- Each time, say the word and the sound: "/c/ /c/ cricket"
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Show a real cup and an unlit candle. Learners name them and say /c/
- Ask: "What does cake start with?" Learners say /c/
- Draw "C" in the air one last time
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four pictures without help
Day 2: Do You Know and Join (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 5
- Pencils
- The cup and candle from Day 1
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 5 again. Point and say: crow, cricket, cake, cane
- Sing the /c/ sound: "c, c, cake; c, c, crow"
- Draw "C" and "c" on the board; learners trace them in the air
Do You Know (6 minutes)
- Point to the boy in the hat and read his question aloud: "Name the desert which begins with 'C'."
- Explain simply: a desert is a very dry place with lots of sand and very little rain
- Tell learners the answer: Cholistan is a desert in Pakistan
- Say it together slowly: "/c/ /c/ Cholistan"
Listen for /c/ (6 minutes)
- Say each word slowly. Learners tap their heads when they hear /c/ at the start: cake, candle, cup, crow, cane
- Then say "ant". Learners keep their hands down
- Ask: "What does ant start with?" Learners remember /a/
Join the Pictures (10 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Which of these things begin with the sound 'c'? Join them with the letter 'C'."
- Point to the pink "C" in the middle and say /c/ together
- Name the four small pictures together: cake, candle, cup, ant
- Show how to draw a line from the dot next to a picture to the "C"
- Learners join the cake, the candle and the cup to the "C"
- Ask: "Did you join the ant?" (no) "Why not?" (ant starts with /a/)
Wrap-Up (3 minutes)
- Ask each learner to name one thing they joined
- Say the four page words one last time together
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand to draw the first line; say "cake, /c/" as you draw together
- Extension: Ask confident learners to tell a friend why the ant is left out
Teaching Tips (from textbook)
- The /c/ /c/ bubble shows the sound of the letter; say it twice each time
- The first letter of every word is printed in pink to show the "C"
- Read the activity instruction aloud: learners join the pictures, they do not read the words
