Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the capital "C" and the small "c" when asked
2. Say the sound /c/ (the hard sound in cake)
3. Name the pictures on page 5: crow, cricket, cake, cane
4. Join the things that begin with /c/ (cake, candle, cup) to the letter "C" and leave out the ant
5. Take part in the Do You Know question about the desert that begins with "C" (Cholistan)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Cc" on page 5. Ask: "Which one is big C? Which one is small c?" The learner points
• Criteria: Points to both letters without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the /c/ /c/ bubble and ask: "What sound does C make?"
• Criteria: Says the hard /c/ sound clearly, as in cake
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. crow
  2. cricket
  3. cake
  4. cane
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Joining Activity (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the activity at the bottom of page 5: "Which of these things begin with the sound 'c'? Join them with the letter 'C'."
• Criteria:
  • Joins the cake, the candle and the cup to the "C"
  • Does not join the ant
• Rating: All correct / 2 correct / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "C" and "c" on page 5 (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "c" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 5. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • crow, cricket, cake, cane

Part C: Join It (4 marks)

• Learner joins the cake (1 mark), the candle (1 mark) and the cup (1 mark) to the "C"
• Learner leaves the ant out and says it starts with /a/ (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Hold a real cup and candle with the teacher and say "/c/ /c/ cup, /c/ /c/ candle"
  • Play "Point to it" with the four page 5 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Draw a big "C" in the air: it is an open circle, like a cookie with a bite out of it
  • Say "crow, cricket, cake, cane" with a parent at home
