Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 2
Letter Bb
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Bb". Learners look at the big capital "B" and small "b", say the sound /b/, and name four pictures that begin with "B": baby, banana, bus and book. On the second day they answer the Do You Know question about friends' names and complete the colouring activity, choosing the balloon and not the apple. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)
- Recognise the capital letter "B" and the small letter "b"
- Say the sound /b/
- Name things that begin with the letter "B"
- Colour the picture that begins with "B"
Key Vocabulary
- baby
- banana
- bus
- book
Do You Know
- "Name your friend whose name begins with 'B'."
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 4
- A real banana and a storybook
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of baby, banana, bus, book
- Board and marker
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Quickly revise Lesson 1: "What does A say?" (/a/) "Name an A picture."
- Draw a big "B" in the air with your finger and ask learners to copy you
- Show the /b/ sound: press your lips together and pop them open. Learners copy
Meet the Letter (5 minutes)
- Open page 4 and point to the big red "Bb"
- Say: "This is big B. This is small b." Learners point and repeat
- Point to the /b/ /b/ bubble and say it together
- Show that every word on the page starts with a pink "B"
Look and Say (10 minutes)
- Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
- baby
- banana
- bus
- book
- Talk about the pictures: the baby is wearing a striped woolly hat; the bus is a yellow school bus; the book is green
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture
Move and Say (5 minutes)
- Baby: learners rock a pretend baby in their arms
- Bus: learners sit in a line and drive the school bus
- Book: learners open their hands like a book
- Each time, say the word and the sound: "/b/ /b/ bus"
Feel and Say (4 minutes)
- Pass a real banana and a book around the circle
- When a learner holds one, they name it and say /b/
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Ask: "What does banana start with?" Learners say /b/
- Draw "B" in the air one last time
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four pictures without help
Day 2: Do You Know and Colour (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 4
- Crayons
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 4 again. Point and say: baby, banana, bus, book
- Sing the /b/ sound: "b, b, bus; b, b, book"
- Draw "B" and "b" on the board; learners trace them in the air
Do You Know (7 minutes)
- Point to the boy in the hat and read his question aloud: "Name your friend whose name begins with 'B'."
- Say /b/ /b/ and let learners think of friends or classmates whose names start with that sound
- Each time, say the name slowly and stress the first sound so everyone hears /b/
- If a name does not start with /b/, say it kindly and ask: "Do you hear /b/?"
Listen for /b/ (6 minutes)
- Say each word slowly. Learners clap when they hear /b/ at the start: baby, banana, bus, book
- Then say "apple". Learners keep their hands still
- Ask: "What does apple start with?" Learners remember /a/ from Lesson 1
Colour the Picture (10 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Colour the picture beginning with the letter 'B'."
- Point to the pink "B" in the middle and say /b/ together
- Point to the apple and ask: "Does apple start with B?" (no)
- Point to the balloon and ask: "Does balloon start with B?" (yes)
- Learners colour only the balloon in any colour they like
Wrap-Up (2 minutes)
- Ask each learner: "What did you colour?" Learners say "balloon"
- Say the four page words one last time together
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand to start colouring; say "balloon, /b/" as you colour together
- Extension: Ask confident learners to tell a friend why the apple stays white
Teaching Tips (from textbook)
- The /b/ /b/ bubble shows the sound of the letter; say it twice each time
- The first letter of every word is printed in pink to show the "B"
- Read the activity instruction aloud: learners colour the picture, they do not read the words
