Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the capital "B" and the small "b" when asked
2. Say the sound /b/
3. Name the pictures on page 4: baby, banana, bus, book
4. Colour the picture that begins with "B" (balloon, not apple)
5. Take part in the Do You Know question about a friend whose name begins with "B"

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are not asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Bb" on page 4. Ask: "Which one is big B? Which one is small b?" The learner points
• Criteria: Points to both letters without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the /b/ /b/ bubble and ask: "What sound does B make?"
• Criteria: Says /b/ clearly, with lips pressed together first
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. baby
  2. banana
  3. bus
  4. book
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Colouring Activity (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the activity at the bottom of page 4: "Colour the picture beginning with the letter 'B'."
• Criteria:
  • Colours the balloon
  • Leaves the apple uncoloured
  • Can say why: "Balloon starts with /b/"
• Rating: Correct with reason / Correct / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "B" and "b" on page 4 (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "b" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 4. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • baby, banana, bus, book

Part C: Odd One Out (2 marks)

• Show the balloon and the apple. Ask: "Which one starts with /b/?" (1 mark)
• Ask: "What sound does apple start with?" Learner says /a/ (1 mark)

Part D: Colour It (2 marks)

• Learner colours the balloon (1 mark) and leaves the apple (1 mark)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Hold a real banana and a book with the teacher and say "/b/ /b/ banana, /b/ /b/ book"
  • Play "Point to it" with the four page 4 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Practise the /b/ sound by pressing lips together and popping them open
  • Say "baby, banana, bus, book" with a parent at home
